My Page Is My Solace

Writing is many things for me. I love words, and I love being a writer. My craft is something I strive to make better and more like me. I’ve received much benefit from nurturing this craft. For me the page can be a place of solace.
A place where I come to unpack my rattling mind. There is so much information to process in this world, especially since the ascent of AI and the burgeoning of digital technology & the internet. We are all inundated by so many data points. So much information we have to deal with in order to meet daily needs and communicate with others
Thus, the intention of nurturing a calming writing practice offers me a comforting routine. A calming one. Even when I write on inflammatory or touchy themes or potentially divisive topics, I still feel comforted and a sense of relaxation when I write and read back from the page. The page is an outlet for me to simply be. No other commitment pulling me at that moment. In that regard, it’s a mindful perspective, I suppose.
I need more mindful practice in my days. The page centres and grounds me. It begs me to re-examine what sort of life I want to live by. I want to live more intentionally in all things. It’s not always easy. In fact, most times it’s hard. So I suppose my page has become a grounding force in my life. Whether it’s on screen or on paper.
I’ve always been a journalist – in the literal sense of the word. Even if I haven't always kept a traditional journal in the complete sense of things. I like to scribble my thoughts, adore writing lists, and like to ink down my thoughts on scraps of paper here and there.
Writing has indeed become a stabilising force for me in this often chaotic thing called modern life. It’s simple and slow rituals like writing and returning to the page that can do so much for one’s mental health and sense of control in this world.
In a world where war prevails, unfathomable things are being bestowed on vulnerable populations and demographics. It’s lovely to craft cosy, slow, peaceful spaces in our lives. Activities, things and experiences that remind us that life doesn't have to be a lying hell. That reminds us that it’s okay for some things to be left undone. Unspoken even.
A page for me is many things. Yet in this essay I focus on the role of my page as a respite and as a comforting friend. One that gently guides my hands to a space where I can exist and self-express. A space of gentleness and calm.
This essay is in response to this month’s IndieWeb Carnival, hosted by Mirasabel. The monthly theme is Pages. I could write several essays around this enjoyable theme. But you lucky fellas get only one.
