Digital Gardens As Personal Refuge

I like to conceive of ways of tending to my digital garden. Simple additions here and there to fertilise the soil of my digital garden. Like a real garden, it requires me coming back again and again to nurture it, prune things out, collect up weeds, plant seeds, and muse on what's working and what's not.

In the course of doing some research on what others are doing in their own online gardens, as a way to stay inspired and spark new ideas. I came across the idea of a digital garden as a refuge. This phrase really resonates with me.

I haven't even read the full article yet, but seeing those words was enough to light the fire for me to write this. In many ways my digital garden is an online refuge. A safe and cosy space where I come to tend to ideas, self-express, show my readers more of me, work through thoughts and dismantle and reassemble my mind. It’s also a calm and quiet space away from the busyness of social media, online groups and platforms.

A place where I have intentionally cultivated a space that allows my thoughts to settle and my ideas to breathe. It’s my own space online that I get to pour my energy into. Without the terror of algorithms or silly online games dictating what gets to come alive and bloom. How I see it, anything we consistently pour our time, attention, energy and intention into is an important aspect of our lives.

My digital garden is the online extension of my real life. It’s not just a website, but my personal thought institution. A place where I’m slowly growing a huge part of my magnum opus. I reasoned along these lines and decided against building a conventional website. You know the one with the blog as the sole outlet of writing or creative expression.

Instead, I’ve included an area in my digital garden for my unpolished/unrefined thoughts, as well as another outlet for shorter writing and notes. That also contains creative updates on my mini-projects and website developments.

All these different arms sow roots in my garden, allowing it to be a place where every form of writing and thought gets space to be. You’ll find essays, poetry, quotes, aphorisms, microwriting, creative projects, and so much more.

I do not know what my garden will end up becoming, and in many ways there is no end point. It’s a living, breathing thing that continues to evolve and manifest more of itself over time.

My digital garden is a refuge of thoughts, ideas, and my mind.
